Clean-Up for Remembrance launches Saturday 5th November 2022, 10.45am at St Peter’s Church

Petersfield Society will be launching the Clean-Up for Remembrance on Saturday 5th November at 10.45am at St Peter’s Church in the Square in Petersfield. All are welcome to borrow litter-picking equipment, have some refreshments and be part of the team for this year.

“The goal is to have the town free of litter for the Remembrance Sunday services. If we have enough volunteers we hope to clear the villages of litter too,” commented organiser Beth Svarovska.

“We do this in two phases. First is a ‘deep clean’ where volunteers each agree an area and clear it of litter whenever it suits them during the week running up to Remembrance Sunday, 5th – 12th November.”

“Second is a ‘final polish’ where a smaller group of volunteers do an early-morning clean-up in the town centre before veterans and the public gather for the Remembrance parade and service.”

If weather-permits there will also be a group who will go out as a team on the morning of the launch, 5th November, to clear the water meadows of litter.

“St Peter’s Church, in the centre of the town, are delighted to be hosting the litter pick event this year, which honours the veterans of all wars,” commented Rev. Alison Waterhouse. “We are pleased to engage with our community, promote involvement with our local environment, and take pride in our town and how it looks.”

Cllr Chris Paige, Petersfield Town Council’s Armed Forces Champion commented: “It is often the simplest of acts which might go unnoticed, but mean the most. The work all the Petersfield Society volunteers do to ensure the town is as free of litter as possible on Remembrance Sunday means so much to the whole Armed Forces Community in Petersfield. I would very much like to express my thanks, both as a veteran and as PTC’s Armed Forces Champion.”

Since its inception by Petersfield Society in 2017, Clean-Up for Remembrance has involved hundreds of volunteers. Groups from around the town get involved, including Rams Hill Residents Association, East Petersfield Residents Association, the WI, Petersfield Lions, U3A and the local schools, with support from EHDC and Petersfield Town Council.
